You couldn’t make it up Senior Conservative MP halts proceeding in the commons to request official instructons

on how to dispose of a broken Energy Saving light bulb that he found in his office, so parliamentary time was taken up drawing up a ten point instruction plan on how to safely dispose of a light bulb The MP who tabled the question in the commons was David Davies (Conservative)

This is actually a valid point given that they contain mercury. It’s okay for the Government to force through a law that will force us to adopt low energy bulbs, but this just contains further problems in that how do we then dispose of the low energy bulbs that are more toxic to the environment when used than the current ordinary bulbs that we have now? Well done to David Davies and the Conservatives for highlighting the issue and the lack of foresight in forcing this on the public!!!

In addition, the waste charges of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive act as a restraint. As a result, disposal is a problem due to the comparatively high levels of mercury present in compact fluorescent light bulbs. The directive puts the burden of disposal of LEBs squarely on the shoulders of the manufacturers and suppliers.

“The presence of mercury poses environmental and health problems,” says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Akhil Sivanandan. “Another hurdle to the market is the initial investment. If it is true that a growing number of consumers is switching from traditional incandescent bulbs to low energy bulbs, at the same time many people are unwilling to pay the extra amount for LEBs. A lack of awareness of the benefits is usually the main reason for this.”
