Why don’t they have compressed air mains in cities?
Compressed air would be an extremely useful complement to electricity in the home. You could use pneumatics for the “heavy lifting” and electronics for the control systems.
A compressor could also be run from an external-combustion engine, so it could be run from burnable domestic waste, and several such plants distributed around probably would save energy as compared to transporting it to a central recycling plant using fossil fuels.
Safety? Compressed air is about as safe as it gets, surely?!
